Edit your own website with ClientDesk
How to edit your own website without learning WordPress
Being able to edit your own website — change a price, swap a photo, fix a typo — should be the easy part of owning one. For most small business owners it is not. The tools on offer are either too fiddly to learn or so powerful that one wrong click takes a page down, so the job goes back to emailing a developer and waiting two days.
ClientDesk is our answer to that. It is built into every site we make, and it lets you edit your own website by typing what you want changed in ordinary English. No page builder, no drag-and-drop, no WordPress training.
What ClientDesk actually is
ClientDesk is a plugin we wrote ourselves. It sits in your WordPress dashboard as a chat box. You describe the change you want, it finds the relevant part of your site, makes the edit and saves it.
So instead of hunting through menus for the right screen, you type something like “change the phone number in the footer to 021 555 0000” or “swap the photo on the about page for the new one I uploaded”, and it happens.
It is not a general-purpose chatbot bolted onto WordPress. It only has access to your site, it only makes the change you asked for, and it takes a snapshot of the page before it writes anything.
What it means to edit your own website in plain English
The practical difference is in what you no longer need to know. You do not need to understand the difference between a page and a post, or which of four editing screens controls the header, or what a shortcode is.
Things people ask it to do most often:
- Change text anywhere on the site — prices, opening hours, service descriptions, contact details
- Replace an image. ClientDesk shows you which images are on the page and you pick the one to swap
- Add a new page and put it in the navigation menu
- Adjust text size, headings and colours within the palette the site was built with
- Replace a PDF — a price list or menu — while keeping the same link
Every change is backed up first. If something does not look right, one click puts it back. Snapshots are kept for 30 days, though we would not lean on rollback as a substitute for reading the change before you publish it.
How ClientDesk works, step by step
1. You describe the change
Type it the way you would say it to a person. You do not need to name the page if it is obvious from the context, and you can ask for several changes in one go.
2. It finds the right code and shows you
ClientDesk locates the exact text or image you mean and shows you a preview before anything is saved. If it has found the wrong thing, you say so and it looks again.
3. It saves and clears the cache
This part matters more than it sounds. On a lot of sites you make a change, reload the page and see nothing, because a caching plugin is still serving the old version. ClientDesk clears the cache on save, so what you see is what your visitors get.
Why it does not slow your website down
This is the question we get asked most, usually by people who have been burned by a page builder.
Page builders like Divi and Elementor give you drag-and-drop editing, and the price is weight. They load their own framework of CSS and JavaScript on every page, and they wrap your content in layers of markup. A simple page can end up several times larger than it needs to be, which shows up directly in your load time and in your search rankings.
We do not build with page builders. Our sites are plain WordPress with hand-written code in three sections — header, body and footer. There is no framework to load, so the pages are as light as the content itself.
ClientDesk edits that same hand-written code. It does not add modules, wrappers or a builder layer, so a site that was fast on the day it launched is still fast after a year of you editing it. That is the honest version of the speed claim: ClientDesk will not make your site faster, but it lets you keep editing without slowly making it slower, which is what usually happens.
If page speed is your actual problem right now, the things that move the needle most are covered in our post on improving website speed.
The SEO side
ClientDesk also includes a search panel for each page. You set a target phrase, and it grades the page against it — whether the phrase appears in the page title, the main heading, the opening paragraph and the subheadings, whether your meta description is the right length, and whether your images have alt text.
It shows this as a set of coloured dots, so you can see at a glance which pages need attention. It also catches broken links and lets you redirect old URLs, which is the sort of housekeeping that quietly costs you traffic when nobody is watching it.
What it will not do
Worth being straight about the limits.
ClientDesk is for content, not redesigns. It will change your words, images and pages. It will not restructure a layout, build a new section from scratch or redesign your homepage — that is still work you ring us about.
It also works because it is part of the hosting setup we manage. If you move your website to another host, the site itself keeps working normally and all your content, pages and design go with you, but ClientDesk stops being available, because it is tied to our infrastructure rather than to your site.
How to get ClientDesk
It is included with every site we build, at no extra cost, and there is nothing to install or configure. If we built your site, log into your dashboard and it is already there.
If your site was built by someone else and you are stuck emailing a developer every time a price changes, that is usually a conversation about a rebuild rather than a plugin. Have a look at what a new build involves, or just get in touch and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.
