About these articles

Why we keep a web design blog at all

Most of what appears on this web design blog started life as an answer to a client question. Someone rings up asking why their new site is not showing on Google, or whether they really need a domain email address, or what to do about the SEO spam landing in their inbox every morning. If the answer takes more than five minutes on the phone, it usually ends up here so the next person can read it instead.

That shapes what you will find. There is no coverage of framework release notes, no opinion pieces about design trends, and nothing written to hit a word count. The articles are aimed at the person who owns the business and has to make a decision, not at the person who will be writing the code.

Who writes it

Patrick writes the lot. Impact Websites has been building and hosting sites for New Zealand businesses since 2012, so the examples come from real jobs on real servers, including the ones that went wrong. Where something is our opinion rather than settled fact, it is flagged as such.

What to read first

If your site has just launched, start with the article on why a new website is not showing on Google yet, then the one on promoting a new website. If your site has been up for years and has gone quiet, the pieces on search engine rankings and improving website speed are the more useful pair. If you are still at the planning stage, read the domain name article before you buy anything.

Something you want covered and cannot find here? Send us the question. If it is a good one, it becomes the next article.
